Vernonia Fossil Adventure

Postby PoC » Sun May 31, 2015 12:42 am

Today Dan came and woke me up for a fossil hunting expedition! I went without any expectation of finding anything but it turned out to be a great day. He'd sent me this link the day before showing some places near Portland that might turn up some fossils which got the gears turning. Anyway here's some pictures!

The tadpoles were in these small pools. It looked like there were Daphnia and bloodworms in there with them that may be a source of food.

The salmonberries were not completely ripe but I ate this one.

Some brittle tubes we found that seemed to be roots.

Dan kept mistaking crayfish for rocks

Saw a couple of these salamanders hiding under rocks a foot or so from the water. I believe it may be a Dunn's Salamander (Plethodon dunni). So small and adorable.

AND...

My find for the day was this fossilized root! I was just sitting down looking around and this felt heavier than I expected and made clinking noises against rocks.

Dan found some more awesome stuff but I will leave that for him to post.

Sweet! What a fun day! I could spend a whole day just sifting through the river bed for rocks :D

Nice photos and write up, thanks!

James.
